abstract = {In the decades around 1900, the German-speaking societies underwent profound changes affecting both work and consumption. In their eyes, life should above all be fun and provide diversions – in leisure time as well as at work. The bourgeois value of a general industriousness however, by which so many diaries of the 19th century were characterized, played only a subordinate role.
