In 2018, Müge Özbek received her PhD at Boğaziçi University in Turkey (Atatürk Institute for Modern Turkish History). In her dissertation titled “Single, Poor Women in Istanbul, 1850–1915: Prostitution, Sexuality, and Female Labor”, she focuses on the urban experience of self-supporting women as significant agents of urban change in Istanbul between 1850 and 1915. Adopting a gender-specific perspective, the study further suggests a rethinking of concepts such as public order, mobility, and labor.
