The Università degli studi di Padova will award one research grand for a post-doctoral position in the project “Women’s Work in Rural Italy (1500-1800)”. The research project aims to improve our knowledge on
women’s work in rural Italy, with a focus on the 16th-18th centuries. The aim is not only to quantify what activities and in what percentage women and men were engaged, but also to reconceptualise some central categories now used in
historical analysis and in the current debate, such as productive /improductive, remunerated / unpaid, private /public, domestic and care. The project will focus on the rural context, spaces and labour mobility. New research will be carried out in the Italian archives, using the wealth of information present in criminal judicial sources.

The research will develop thanks to the collection of new archival data on different regions of pre-industrial Italy. The subject of the investigation will be some areas of the Republic of Venice, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Kingdom of Naples. The project will develop a quantitative database, using the verb-oriented methodology and linking the language used, the use of space and the forms of mobility. The project will develop a quantitative database, through the verb-oriented method. The results include at least 3,000 evidences on work in the rural environment, at least two articles submitted to international journals in the field of economic and social history, participation in at least four international seminars and conferences, the presentation of a new project on a scale broader and a series of dissemination activities to the widest audience.
